Powder Horn
So your Venturers want to climb, scuba dive, sail, conduct a historical reenactment and hunt. And you don't know how to do all of those things? No worries: there's Powder Horn! Click on the following link for the 2007 Powder Horn Registration Flyer. For even MORE information, visit the Gulf Ridge Council Powder Horn Website!
Powder Horn is an amazing, out-of-the-box, mind-expanding course that introduces and exposes Venturing and Boy Scouting adult leaders to the activities and resources necessary to operate a successful outdoor, high adventure unit-level program. Based on the eight core requirements and eighteen electives of the Venturing Ranger program, Powder Horn helps adult leaders go outside and beyond the typical Scouting box to find and use resources to conduct unit-level high adventure programs.
Although no high adventure skills are taught in this course, Powder Horn introduces most activities with hands-on segments. For example, for scuba we plan to do a Discover SCUBA (PADI) session where participants get into a pool and wear scuba gear. Participants will have an opportunity to rock climb or shoot a skeet course and will learn where to go to find those who can teach these skills (and more) to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Because most high adventure activities require highly trained and competent instructors, it's impossible for you to be expertly trained in all areas of the Ranger Program in the six days of the course.
Instead of qualifying you as a trainer or an expert, Powder Horn will give you tremendous resources so your youth can enjoy an exciting, high adventure program. And all these resources and experiences are presented in an amazingly fun environment by experts in their fields. It's no wonder that participants repeatedly say:
"Powder Horn is like no other training that Scouting has to offer!"
