Other Training
The BSA has a wealth of additional training materials, aides and courses all designed to make our leaders as productive and proficient as possible. Here's a quick list of some of the more common training courses and where you can get more information. Many of these have links to additional information in the column to the left.
Youth Leadership Continuum. CLICK HERE for a comprehensive list and description of the youth leadership training courses offered by the Boy Scouts of America.
BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation). This is for Cub Scout leaders and is required for any pack that plans a pack camping trip.
OLSWL (Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders). This course covers the primary elements of camping and outdoor program and is appropriate for Webelos den leaders.
Baden-Powell University. A one-day training course for ALL adult leaders in Scouting with courses to support your particular program and needs.
Youth Protection Guidelines for Adult Leaders. Learn how to prevent child abuse or how to recognize signs of abuse in our Scouts. Also, how to protect yourself from unfounded allegations
It Happened to Me. This is the youth protection training for Cub Scout age boys. It can be presented at a Scout meeting but parents or legal guardians must attend with the Scout.
A Time to Tell. This is the youth protection training for Boy Scout age boys. Scouts learn the "3 R's of Youth Protection:" to Recognize potentially abusive situations, Resist the perpetrator and Report the abuse or attempt right away.
Personal Safety Awareness. This is the youth protection training for Venturing age youth (male and female) and covers topics such as date rape, sexual harassment, stalking and internet safety.
Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. These are required by any unit that is doing their own aquatics program.
Climb On Safely. Required for troops that are planning any activity involving climbing.
Whittlin' Chit. This is a special course taught in Cub Scouting (Bear program) to teach basic knife safety and practices.
Totin' Chip, Paul Bunyan Axeman, Firem'n Chit, etc. These are specialized courses taught on troop level for knife, axe and fire safety.
