Cub Scout Youth Leaders

The Patrol Method is not a part of Cub Scouting so there is not as great a role for youth leaders in Cub Scouting as there is in Boy Scouting. The Denner has some leadership responsibilities but the den or pack leadership generally defines those. However, there is one youth leader that should be trained by the Cub Scout leaders: the Den Chief (or the Webelos Den Chief).

Informal training of a den chief should begin as soon as he accepts the role. He should clearly understand the expectations of the den leader and his responsibility when he is at a den meeting, pack meeting or outing. The Den Chief Handbook can be a great resource.

Even more helpful though is for him to attend a Den Chief Training Conference. This one-day course will be offered at the Baden-Powell University in October but is also occasionally offered at the district level. It is the only formal training course for Den Chiefs that is currently available.
